The 8th May 2025 marked the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in Europe day. The Friends group collaborated with Preston City Council and together we came up with a project we called ‘The Victory Beds.’ The beds are located to the side of the parks “Garden Wall Lane” (the road to the NHS carpark).
In early April we started work clearing and weeding the beds and planted a variety of seed potatoes in two of them.
We held a Friends VE celebration party to commemorate the VE Anniversary during which we all scattered wildflower seeds into the remaining two beds.
Over the summer we watched the potatoes and flowers grow, the flowers were a lovely mix called ‘Patriotic’ a sea of red, white and blue flowers appeared that were very attractive to the bees and other pollinators.
We harvested the potatoes in August and made two plentiful donations to a local charity Ashton Food Aid who distribute food to those in need.
We still display the celebration VE board but “The Victory Beds” are now a new work in progress and we are continuing to add new plants and flowers as and when they become available with the help from the Council and any willing volunteers.

Don’t forget to take a look when you are passing by!
