About Ashton Park

Ashton Park began as privately owned land on which Ashton Lodge (now known as Ashton House) was built later.

The house was built by Thomas Shuttleworth and completed in 1810. After Shuttleworth’s death in 1819, the Peddars family purchased the house and its surrounding land.

Following on from the Pedder family, Edmund Harris purchased the estate. After the death of Harris in 1877, the estate continued to change ownership for many years. Most notably local mill owners the Calvert family owned the mansion for a short period who, after the First World War sold it to the English Electric Company.

The English Electric Company later merged with Dick Kerr And Co. which led to the house being used as a social club and the grounds being used for sporting activities and recreation, most notably the Dick Kerr’s Ladies football team.

Preston Town Council bought the estate in 1937 and Ashton House was sold to Lancashire County Council who converted it into a care home. Ashton House was sold to its current owner in 1990 and became a childcare centre. The grounds of Ashton Park remain the property Preston City Council (formally Preston Town Council.
